Ireland will take over the EU presidency from Italy on 1 January, 2004.
An Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) to tie up the loose ends of the European Constitutional Treaty is scheduled to start in October and the Italian EU presidency has requested member states to indicate their positions at the beginning of September.
